Any Beaux-Arts’ grille can be built into handsome radiator covers. However, you will need to build the cover to house the grille you select. It will need to fit over your radiator. Keep at least a 3″ space between the radiator coil and the front inside of the fascia board. Most radiator covers have many similarities, such as they are generally short only 24″ to 36″ tall. The short stature, means a 6″ to 12″ tall grille is usually a good fit. Beaux-Arts’ has over 20 to choose from in lengths from 20″ to 36″. Radiator covers are usually less than 8″ deep from the wall, some are even flush to the wall. Most radiators are located in front of windows, because windows tend to be drafty. These similarities make the tops of radiator covers perfect as low narrow shelves. Marble tops can even be used in wet situations, such as for house plants in front of windows.
This lovely radiator cover was made for a town home in Brooklyn, New York by Lewis Alfieri, using three Beaux-Arts Arts and Crafts style decorative grilles. On the front surface of the radiator, in a vertical orientation, is RR-209 16×30 in Antique Brass.
Both sides of the radiator cover also feature our Arts and Crafts Style Grilles #RR-209 06×30. The grilles were installed on the back of the mahogany fascia boards.
Arts and Crafts Radiator Cover Design using RR-209 12×36. A good radiator cover not only looks attractive but creates convection air circulation in the room. It does this by drawing the cold air from the floor cut out into the radiator cover and releasing heated air from the radiator through a grille near the top of the cover. The size of the radiator box acts as a holding area for hot air from the radiator: the larger the box, the more hot air it can hold. As the radiator heats the air, hot air rises from the box through the grille, and it creates draw, pulling the cold air off the floor. The above radiator box will hold over 3 cubic feet of hot air.
Marble Radiator Cover. Since this radiator cover is over 9 feet long, it required a combination of grille sizes. On the front center of the radiator box is RR-20 24×36 Arts and Crafts grille. The top of the radiator box features one RR-209 04×36 grille in the center, flanked by two of the RR-209 04×20 Arts and Crafts grilles. By using a larger grille in the center with two smaller grilles on the sides, the visual emphasis turns the viewers’ eyes to the center of the cover, creating a more pleasant look than three grilles of the same size. Notice that flat pilasters separating the grilles and on both ends of the front cabinet surface create classical order, as does the Roman Ogee type edge on the top slab of marble.
